Dust of Egypt: A nonlinear artistic take on real history. Sojourner Truth directly narrates to the audience as though she were preaching to us, telling us of her life and failures. The play is mainly about her relationship with her son Peter, who she actually won a court case for. Becoming the first black woman to win a court case against a white man in the year 1828… which is absolutely extraordinary.
It’s a very good play, and one with a surprising amount of depth, and a surprising amount of humor for a topic which could’ve easily been approached from a purely informative historical perspective. They don’t take the easy way out though, and the play covers a lot of ground in a very short amount of time
I shot promotional photos for the play, as well as coverage of one of their first performances. It was a lot of fun, and I hope the photos do the play the justice it deserves.
